Establish each child’s instructional reading level as baseline data.
Lane’s signature school improvement process
The Scholastic Advancement Model
A problem-solving process for schools and school districts that places student learning needs at the center of teaching, planning, and professional development.
What is S.A.M.?
S.A.M. helps schools identify indicators in the teaching and learning process that negatively affect classroom learning, particularly for struggling learners or students whose performance is below grade expectations.
It is designed to teach children how to learn and to prepare teachers to create classroom environments in which any child can learn. S.A.M. is not a stand-alone reading program. It is a structured school and district problem-solving process.
The process gives sustained attention to reading and language arts while strengthening teaching, instruction, school leadership, relationships, and the time students need to learn.

How S.A.M. works
Establish each child’s instructional reading level as baseline data.
Define the teaching and learning problem clearly.
Build objectives, practices, timelines, and projected outcomes.
Train teachers in methods, relationships, learning time, and classroom practice.
Use recurring assessment to review progress and adjust the work.
For students

For teachers
Modules are selected and arranged around each school’s profile, teacher needs, and indicators of student learning difficulty. The emphasis is on practical teacher best practices, productive relationships, effective communication, and protected teaching and learning time.
S.A.M. values teachers’ work, collaboration, professional autonomy, and strong school culture.
Professional development
Projected outcomes
These are projected outcomes described in the S.A.M. source presentation. They are goals of implementation, not guaranteed results.
